French Lick Youth Activities

Molly Lewis-MARC Youth Coordinator

Well, 2010 is here and many Model A’s are shrouded in tarps and quilts, waiting out the winter; but their drivers are not just sitting around waiting for the snow to melt and the sun to finally decide to stick around for a while.  No, many drivers are waiting excitedly for the first sign of the MARC National Meet Registration forms.  June is still a few months away, but I can tell you planning for many activities is under way and you are in for a treat.  When the registration does show up you may notice something:  The youth are taking center stage this year.

So let me give you a lowdown on what’s in for the youth at this Meet.  This year, instead of lumping the older kids with the younger children, there are age limits on many of the activities.  Child-care is provided by the host hotel in French Lick so parents won’t have to worry about their youngsters.  One of the activities requiring an age limit is the driving tour.  Because drivers have to be legally licensed to drive on Indiana roads, the Youth Driving Tour through French Lick requires teens to be 16 and older, legally licensed and a parent/guardian has to come along.  But parents (and youth) don’t worry!  Parents will have something better to do than backseat driving!  French Lick is surrounded by many beautiful and historical parks and this tour will be one of the highlights of the Meet.  And just an F.Y.I, youth drivers do not have to own the car, they don’t even have to have driven the car at great lengths.  The tour is as safe as possible, and a driving school will occur before the tour begins, just to refresh young drivers on the Model A driving specifics.

Since there’s going to be a driving tour, just for youth, what else is going to be involved with it?  Hm.  What about Car Games?  Of course there are going to be car games!  Four fairly simple car games will take place at our final destination and the winners will get prizes from some of the local businesses in French Lick.  After tour and car games there will be a cookout allowing the youth to socialize and parents to breathe a sigh of relief as they inspect their cars and then the youth will head home.  Once we get to the host hotel, many parents will rush off to the Welcome Party at West Baden but the Youth have the option of going to the Youth’s Welcome Party.  One of the best amenities French Lick has is the 6 lane- indoor bowling alley right next door to their very own pizza joint.  This will be the perfect opportunity for the older and younger youth to regroup and have some fun together bowling and chowing down on pizza, (much more exciting than the adults, right?)

Now one of my favorite parts of the Merrillville National Meet was the chassis rebuild.  When I joined the French Lick planning committee in October they had not been able to find a chassis.  I knew right away that we had to have a chassis rebuild.  In Merrillville that was what brought all of the youth together and that was the event that made the Meet so amazing for me.  Now, I know the meet is during Summer Vacation, and I know teens don’t like getting up early on the best of occasions, but you have to admit building a car from the ground up is a lot of fun.  The chassis rebuild is set to happen on June 15th (Tuesday-a.k.a. Youth Day) and will begin bright and early at 10 a.m.  Those of you who were at Merrillville last year remember we rebuilt that speedster in 3 ½ hours!  Let’s see if we can do it in even less time.

So, what else is going to happen at this meet?  Don’t worry, there is a lot happening for the youth during the week.  On Wednesday there’s going to be a seminar on Hubley Derbies, which will allow youth and first time racers to adjust their cars before the big race.  Also on Wednesday the judges for the fine point Model A’s have agreed to have a mentoring program for youth interested in Fine Point Judging.  We’ll have interested youth, ages 13+ meet in the Youth Hospitality room on Tuesday during the lunch break and sign up, and on Wednesday everyone will meet at the youth hospitality room and then head over to West Baden, where the Judging will take place!  But keep in mind, there are only a few judges so the mentoring program is going to be on a first, come, first serve.  If you’re interested in Fine Point specifics, definitely check it out!

There will also be a movie night for the younger youth on Friday night during the banquet and Thursday night after the Mandatory Tour for the teens.  During the Banquet at the end of the week, the youth will have a banquet and a dance.

The Model A community is in for a treat when they come to this amazing Meet and hopefully our youth will love some of the activities planned for them!  Hope to see you there!

Hubley Seminar and Swap Meet

This is a seminar for people who have never raced Hubleys. Kids, youth and Adults. Click on the car image to see more Hubley cars. After the seminar we'll have a race. This seminar will cover general information about the cars, weight specs, and rules. There will be a touch up station (rubber bands, graphite, screw drivers and a “professional” to help the newcomers with their cars before the race.

A swap meet will occur after the seminar.
